Chicago songwriter Elijah Montez, aka Daydream Review, announced his self-titled debut EP will be released on October 1 on Cold Lunch Recordings.
After cutting his teeth in the Austin music scene for several years, Montez was determined to make the move to Chicago. In anticipation, Montez began working on the first songs for his new solo endeavor, Daydream Review. Throughout 2020, Montez began dropping singles and giving hints to what he’s been planning on his new EP.
The project is an exploration of psychedelic pop grandiosity with a relaxed tone perfect for late night summer hangouts by the pool. On his latest single “Dazed,” Montez’ voice is eerily reminiscent of Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker’s falsetto centered around psychedelic tinged atmospherics. Warm synths are the bedrock of the track allowing space for an ever so cool guitar and repetition focused bassline to weave itself throughout the song’s instrumental makeup.
“I think it’s easy to be overcome with nostalgia,” he said in a statement. “When I’m starting something truly brand new to me, there’s this sense of dread or melancholy that can overshadow the excitement I might feel, a kind of foreboding that something is bound to go wrong. There’s a tendency to shrink back into what’s come before as a coping mechanism — a kind of ill-suited comfort that leaves you feeling out of it, and a little sick.”
