Los Angeles-based songwriter Curt Barlage will release his new love laced single, “On the Run,” Friday.
Barlage has been an active member of the Los Angeles music scene for the past decade with his former project The Bixby Knolls and with his currently Strange Phases.
In an effort to expand upon his love for dreamy atmospheres, Barlage decided to embark upon his first solo endeavor. He released an acoustic-driven debut single “So Long Cecilia” in March that presented inklings of the ideas that would evolve on this new track.
“On the Run” focuses on vulnerability to the naked eye and dives into love as an act of defiance.
“Are you the love of all lives past, intertwined in this cosmic dance / We took a chance and now we’re on the run,” softly croons Barlage, his lyrics highlighting the perpetual cycle of love and loss in a relationship.
The song’s atmosphere is sharply reminiscent of the longing melancholia and brooding basslines that can be found in The Cure or Slowdive’s catalog. A squall of synths wash over the listener recreating a tide softly caressing along a moonlit beach in the evening glow.
By the end of the song, both the artist, as well as the listener, come to a consensus that love is not a force to be reckoned with, but simply a place to pass through. Never content to be idle and beckoning us to follow.
