Few bands have been able to reach the same level of nightmarish sonic chaos that Full of Hell has over their decade plus as a band. The four piece has mastered a specific kind of assault, fusing hardcore, grindcore, blackmetal/death metal, and noisey electronic textures that can raise your heart rate and at the same time paralyze.
This year, the band has returned crafting a new pathway through their perplexing musical hedge maze with their visceral new album Garden of Burning Apparitions, out now on Relapse Records.
This new record further cements them as one of the most consistently pulverizing bands around while bringing them into new unchartered territories both rhythmically and thematically. As with every Full of Hell release, it’s a fool’s errand to go in with any assumptions or expectations and with Garden of Burning Apparitions, the band has raised the bar yet again.
In this conversation with lead singer Dylan Walker, I caught up with him over Zoom from his home in Central Pennsylvania to discuss the evolving creative process of the band, the new record, and the collaborative records that Full of Hell has made over the years with experimental duo The Body and Japanese noise musician Merzbow.
We also discuss escaping imposter syndrome, splitting up time between the road and his home life, figuring out early on how to mix noise and electronic elements into the band’s sound, plus the merits of a good quality t-shirt.
