One thing that will never change, whether during the trying era of COVID-19, or just that one random morning down the line, when you just wake up and realize you’re sick of his shit, is the need for, and the reliable comfort of, the breakup song. I mean, demand for that one, good lyric that just gets you and your situation, is probably high as hell right now, as divorce rates of first marriages are anticipated to be 40% when quarantine is over. Well, Giggly Boys got you covered with “Inside Moves,” the second single from their ‘It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere’ series.
Perhaps a little more ominous than last week’s “South Of Nowhere,” a single guitar chord marches forth to start the track, the strings pulled at, into dark turfs, to tip us off that things are going awry. A brooding rhythm section enters in, as singer Erik Schwertfeger paints scenes of strife, resentment and hopelessness. It’s an all too familiar glimpse into arguments we’ve all fought, and lost, in the shower, before having them blow up in reality’s less eloquent, less rhymed, terminology. Situations that couldn’t be made better, even with the best of couples therapists. There’s a sort of agitated resoluteness in Schwertfeger’s chorus, as he laments time wasted, and looks to the future. “Better believe, when you leave / I’ll be pissing with the door wide open / Time is a thief, good fuckin’ grief / From hereon out, we’ll be golden.” A watery guitar solo introduces the bridge, as though to wash us clean of this mess, before hammering home that we’ll be better off once we go our separate ways. Good luck on the other side of this.
