Brazil’s Gabo shares his dream-laced debut single, “Corre Rua,” from his upcoming EP Bicicleta Sem Rodinha, which will release April 9 on the label Living Waters Records.
Residing in Porto Alegre, Gabo (Gabriel Islaz) grew up within the Brazilian city’s sprawling iconography and storied cultural hubs. Spurred by his family, Gabo picked up guitar as a youngster and turned to the influence of the local alternative radio station, Ipanema FM.
In the wake of lockdown, Gabo delved into home recording and took a fresh DIY approach to his songwriting that formed the scenic landscapes of Bicicleta Sem Rodinha. Recording every instrument himself in the hurdles of Brazil’s diar outbreak, you can sense the changing tides of emotion that weave through the EP. From the isolated fragments of loss, to the youthful exuberance of hope.
“Corre Rua” recreates the pandemic’s groundhog effect where time loses its value and the days bleed together. Shimmering guitars provide the base of the track, allowing space for Gabo’s harmonious vocals and a theme detailing the vital role human connection plays in our lives.
“I wanted to talk about my sentiments regarding Porto Alegre’s nightlife, evoking the young aura from the street parties and thinking about the close relationships that people of my age group have with each other,” said Gabo in a statement. “I wrote it trying to bring some of these scenarios and situations to life.”
Directed by Pachuca Productions, the track’s music video is made up of vignettes from Porto Alegre’s emptied streets in the midst of lockdown, spliced together with a performance by Gabo.
