Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong‘s 工工工 new music video for Simon Frank’s remix of their track “Moonshadows,” is bathed in a Lynchian fantasy.
Composed of Tom Ng and Joshua Frank, Gong Gong Gong 工工工 has been a consistent expansion of rudimentary post-punk and Ng’s stream of consciousness lyricism. Today, the duo will be releasing a remix version of their 2019 debut Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏 featuring guest reworkings from P.E., Angel Wei and Howie Lee to name a few.
On their new video for “Moonshadows,” guitarist and vocalist Ng is present on a hazy stage with Simon Frank, bassist Joshua Frank’s brother, (donning sunglasses) performing synth while a three-foot puppet dances between the pair. You can’t help but picture David Lynch series Twin Peaks’ Roadhouse location while watching the video, where the strange aspects of the dream world collide with reality in a seedy bar. There’s a certain grit in the track’s instrumentals as Frank’s synth turns up before Ng belts out a hedonistic yell, the fluidity of the bassline recreating the puppet’s shifting dance.
“I’ve done a lot of different projects with Gong Gong Gong, and Simon is a good friend too. For this music video, I was interested in creating a feeling of mutual temptation and ambiguity, and looking at passions igniting and fading,” explains Director Liu Yi. “I wanted to show each person existing in their own space in the frame, but also to create moments where they intersect and overlap, complicating their relationships to each other. It’s kind of an examination of a state of love, defined by internal questioning and complicated passions.”
