Philadelphia’s experimental duo, Writhing Squares, share their latest off-kilter creation, “NFU.”
The duo is composed of multi-instrumentalist Kevin Nickles and Daniel Provenzano, the singer and bassist, who’ve known each other since high school. The pair found a home in South Philly’s flourishing punk scene, honing their jazz infused noise jams into self-described “cosmic slop” while releasing a slew of material.
Now, the duo is set to release their third full-length album Chart For The Solution on Trouble In Mind Records on March 26. The double album is littered with Writhing Squares’ no-wave inspired ruminations that come to a head on their new single, “NFU.”
The track is a cacophony of sonic revelry with Provenzano’s reverb-drenched vocals and trudging bass. Philly legend Dan “Harmonica” Balcer guest stars with a harp line that blends with the brutish energy of Nickles’ deranged sax.
“We’ve had Dan Balcer join us on stage a bunch of times over the years,” said Provenzano in a press release. “Dude’s a ripper legend and we figured it was about time to get him on a record.”
The band’s self-directed music video is a collage of color palettes and graphics layered above old concert footage that brings the schizophrenic energy of the track to life.
